What Everyone Should Know About Being Saved

The subject “On Being Saved” is of extraordinary concern to every Christian. It is not a topic that can be ignored, avoided or treated lightly. Much of our peace of mind as Christians rests upon a clear understanding of this subject. Yet we find that people may often exhibit greater concern over their financial portfolios than they do about the health of their relationship with Christ. This must not be so with us.

A dictionary definition of “save” in a theological sense is, “to deliver from sin.” The theological definition of “salvation” is “spiritual rescue from sin and death.” This would seem easy to understand because the Bible clearly teaches that we are all sinners and, therefore, God’s judgment stands against us. We also have learned that a way has been provided to lift that judgment against us through Christ. All Christians are in agreement on this. Other religions may have different approaches to sin. Christianity is unique in presenting Christ as the only means of lifting the judgment of death from us.

Jesus said, “I am the door of the sheep. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved” (John 10:7-9). That may seem dogmatic, but this is the message of Jesus Christ himself.

It is easy to use words such as “saved” and “salvation” without regard to the biblical context or some of the overriding qualifications when the entire subject is brought into focus. Anyone may quote a scripture or two, and if it is quoted long and loud enough, it is easy to come away feeling that is all that the Bible has to say. Yet the Bible is a book with many texts that are qualified by other Biblical texts. When there are over a hundred verses on “being saved” and only one or two are used, there is a danger that we may come away with an improper or inadequate view.

“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved,” is a beautiful text (Acts 16:31). But what does it mean to “believe”? James tells us, “The devils also believe, and tremble” (James 2:19). Are they “saved”? No! What does it mean to be “saved”? These are questions that, hopefully, will be answered in this biblical presentation. Why did Jesus make the terms for receiving “everlasting life” so difficult for the young nobleman? Why is this so often overlooked? How can we harmonize all the Bible has to say on being “saved”?

Ahh, so glad to see you are well Br. Ari Matthews Davies. God and Christ is indeed Good isn’t he. From your comment it seems you have felt his power this winter. We will praise him. Jacqueline

  • Hey all and Greetings,

The original post here was from the Bible Today website and not from a Bible Students related or similar contributor. That may not be entirely inappropriate, if the tenor of the message is not at odds with Scripture. I don’t know if it was, but I do care, because Jehovah certainly does.

Where does all this it end? Webpages and dissertations from Catholic and Islamic sources where salvation from the burning fires of eternal torment may be the central theme?

The diverse excape-hatch salvation scenarios muddy the waters of the springs of salvation, which were exclusively for Jehovah’s People Israel:
(Isaiah 12:3)  With exultation YOU people will be certain to draw water out of the springs of salvation. NWT

Yes, spoken to Israel via their Prophet Isaiah about a time when the Root of Jesse would make his presence felt to give salvation to Jehovah’s precious inheritanc, yet far into the future in the life of the disobedient transgressor Israel:
(Isaiah 11:10-12) 10 And it must occur in that day that there will be the root of Jes′se that will be standing up as a signal for the peoples. To him even the nations will turn inquiringly, and his resting-place must become glorious. 11 And it must occur in that day that Jehovah will again offer his hand, a second time, to acquire the remnant of his people who will remain over from As‧syr′i‧a and from Egypt and from Path′ros and from Cush and from E′lam and from Shi′nar and from Ha′math and from the islands of the sea. 12 And he will certainly raise up a signal for the nations and gather the dispersed ones of Israel; and the scattered ones of Judah he will collect together from the four extremities of the earth.

When will that be? Behold, at the end of the greatest tribulation in severity and duration ever to befall any people, Israel from the onslaught by the Romans in 70CE, continuing even as we speak, to the time yet ahead when the multiethnic little flock of anointed Israel are called by Christ their Lord from out of those in their graves together with those still alive at the same time* to heavenly governance:
(1 Thessalonians 4:17) 17 Afterward we the living who are surviving will, together* with them, be caught away in clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and thus we shall always be with [the] Lord.. . .
    * NWT footnote at ‘together’ in 1 Thess 4:17 ‘at the same time’

Matthew 24:29-31: “Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 30 And then the sign of the Son of man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will beat themselves in lamentation, and they will see the Son of man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31 And he will send forth his angels with a great trumpet sound, and they will gather his chosen ones together from the four winds, from one extremity of the heavens to their other extremity.

The ‘All’ used as bait in the various salvation scenarios actually refers to ‘some of all kinds’. Here as per Spurgeon:
…” the whole world has gone after him” Did all the world go after Christ? “then went all Judea, and were baptized of him in Jordan.” Was all Judea, or all Jerusalem, baptized in Jordan? “Ye are of God, little children,” and the whole world lieth in the wicked one”. Does the whole world there mean everybody? The words “world” and “all” are used in some seven or eight senses in Scripture, and it is very rarely the “all” means all persons, taken individually. The words are generally used to signify that Christ has redeemed some of all sorts –some Jews, some Gentiles, some rich, some poor, and has not restricted His redemption to either Jew or Gentile … (C. H. Spurgeon from a sermon on Particular Redemption)

Much more about Salvation and Israel’s role therein here:
http://www.sanctifyname.com which I named from the rendering of the Lord’s Prayer in the NWT, where Jesus encouraged his disciples to assign preeminence to the sanctification of Jehovah’s illustrious name and person.

Hello ari matthews davies and thank you for commenting. It is so nice to hear from you in this new year. Thanks for reminding us that Jehovah never fails us and we should put our trust in him. Sustenance and covering, that’s all that is needed. If a person has a safe place to lay their head, warm clothes and some food and water that will get her through the day. The hope of better times to come in the millenium will warm the heart inside.
I got a book from our free book table this weekend at the Chicago convention entitled “Early Christian Writings” “The Apostolic Fathers”. Ignatius, Clement, Polycarp, Diognetus, Barnabas, Didache, just a few of the writings I am free to read now. I never knew there was so much more holy writings to give us a view into the early Church.
This will be a blessed new year for me as for the first time I will read the entire Bible with a free mind to go with the Spirit and my reasoning power. I know now how to put the scriptures in the right period of time. Bless you and all this new year. Take Care Ari and peace to you, you are so encouraging in the revelations of your walk with God and Jesus. Jacqueline

yes a little more on being saved once saved always saved is a crock of moldy stuff. you can not go to the foot of the cross and walk away saved ! yes I guess I better explain that before some bible thumper starts thumping! salvation is their for you night and day everyday for all eternity but when you go to the cross(pole) you go their for one reason ! to die to your old sinfull nature. Im going to be honest here because I dont want anybody no not one to fool yourself if you sin and go repent your forgiven but if you are in the devils playground when the censor angel walks by guess what your marked WICKED And the rightous man is marked rightous ! it a really dangerous game to lay down your salvation and go party in sin because While your sining you belong to satan and death and if you happen to die in sin you had better hope and pray that jesus christ remember you as the man who busted his butt to be rightous then one day sliped and fell, because if you have been useing the forgiveness of jesus as a license to sin and get forgiven then sin again you better remember jesus christs own words were he says the siner left because he never was with me in the first place ! yes no such thing as once saved you in free ! salvation is like a life saver given to a drowning man who remembers he left his wallet on the sinking ship and lets go of the lifesaver to go get it and goes down with the ship… do not be self deceived you cant make fun of sin or mock at god by going back and forth to the brothel and then sleeping in the house of god. salvation is a forever done deal but yes you can set down your lifesaver and yes its possible to go die in your sins and wake up at the judgement to find out that you left because you were never with him to start with… now Im going to talk about me because Im not saved until Jesus says well done good servant ! the thought of sining and being left outside to weap and grind my teeth is a sobering thought.its so real to me at this point that sining is begining to have all the apeal of climbing down into a septic tank ! and that is how its supposed to feel ! know sin for what it is a spirtual heartattack ! you have the best doctor in the world but why gamble on will I have the power to stumble to him ? no but no ! stay saved by hanging on with all your might to the safety of jesus program ! if your doing rightous work for jesus your a lot closer to being saved then when your out for your friday night ! stay saved dont put down your lifesaver, be like paul who said Im not saved yet but Ive got hold of the lifesaver and Im swiming toward jesus as quick as I can!

being saved hmmm,I will have to quote somebody on this brothers I do not claim to have atained it yet but this I do forgeting the things behind me I hurry forward with all my might to reach the goal wich is the high calling of christ,
yes if he wasnt their yet then certainly Im not their yet. being saved is done forever for every person alive, but the prize that you receive or the judgement depends on us if we stand around caught up in spirtual daydreams we can expect a shovel a rake or wheelborow, instead of a brand new john deere tractor when jesus hands out our asighnments ! so like paul said hurry hurry forward their are prizes to win i dont like rakes and shovels myself,,but its still a wonderous hope that all who love jehovah will receive the benefeit of jesus payment life ! now the bible says all those in the tombs will be resurected some to life some to judgement now why would jehovah wake someone from the dead to be sentanced to death ? the bible says the wages sin pays is death. therefore why are those who practiced vile deads resurected to be judged when the bible says specifically he that dies is forgiven of all sin.this is one good reason im on jesus side I dont have to worry about being resurected for judgement thats why I work toward the goals and prizes eternal life has instead of pointless bickering with my fellowman over what this means or that means I just say it like it is, sir ms I have no earthly idea what that means and Im not even sure I want to know, lets go ask king jesus to explain it, I hear he has a hugh feast prepared for us when we arive, then off we go yes when i sit down to diner with the king then i know im safe untill then i know that behind me is satan his crowd and all his enticements stoping and looking back gets you turned into a pillar of salt so i think i will just press forward no matter what prize I win even a green ribon honerable mention is far better than what is behind..
