Did Jesus Die on A Cross or A Stake?

Though the Bible does not specifically describe the instrument that Jesus died upon, tradition has it that he was put to death on a cross consisting of a stake and a crossbeam. The Greek stauros is sometimes used to describe a simple stake, and other times a more complex form such as the cross. To determine what appearance the stauros took in Jesus’ death, we need to consider what the Greek language tells us, what history tells us, and most importantly, what the Bible tells us.

I don’t know why people put any emphasis at all upon whether Jesus was hanged up on a straight Pole or was hanged upon a cross the result is the same this subject has been the Crux LOL of more division in the body of Christ then I even care to go into Jesus died for my sins and was resurrected for my life and that’s all that I care about. Thank you Jesus for doing it and thank you Jehovah for sending Jesus

Yes, I’m a witness, it’s been over a year since I last attended a kingdom hall, because I chose to fade!

I read you post with interest, Jacqueline, because even when I was thoroughly under the spell, it bugged me that such an issue could be made of such a minor detail when talking about the greatest act of love and sacrifice ever made!

At some point, I will tell my story…. In the meantime thank you for your well thought out response

You are welcome to tell your story any time Meg. I remember my Bible student had a Cross given to her with many precious stones in it because she was hit by a car at 16. The community raised the money. They said she had to get rid of it by destroying it not even selling it. Thank goodness she told her husband and he hid it from her. After she left the religion it was the money she and her children needed to get her care. The society has stock in military and all sorts of holdings. I was brainwashed by them then but it helped for me to see these people and their experiences since I was a born-in. My father defied Nathan Knorr on the blood issue and most men within the org do so except teen age children, they have this informed teenager thing that they invoke. But so glad you asked that was a good question.
We have another post on here called “anointed talk”. I was asked about this also. It too is on here because of the ones coming out of the society and have the view as them that an anointed person is special, instead of all of us running for the upward call. So you might see a few articles and wonder why the title, but it is because of a belief that a witness was taught and they will understand it under that subject. Take Care, Jacqueline

      Greetings Meg.

And welcome! I am very pleased to make your acquaintance. I hope that your experience in fading has been a relatively smooth and pleasant one. It seems that for many it is a very rough transition.

I lurked here for a long time before ever mustering up the courage to post a comment here. Therefore, I’d like to at least acknowledge whatever it was in you (courage? desperation? determination?) that helped you take the risk of expressing yourself here.

I’d also like to express my interest in reading whatever parts of your story that you might feel safe enough to share with all of us–IF (and ONLY IF) and When (and ONLY WHEN) it might please you do so.

      Warmly,
      -greg

If Jesus willingly went to an agonizing sacrificial death for the salvation of mankind, wouldn’t the shape of the cross/stake be a bit irrelevant? I would imagine it would be the last thing on his mind!

Hi Meg and thanks for commenting. The only reason this subject is on here is because the witnesses made it a major doctrinal matter almost that Christ died on a stake. It made it a crime to have a cross or recognize that when a person had one he or she was simply saying they accepted Christ. Otherwise no other Christians made this a relevant subject.
Jesus was to suffer as you stated and according to the sacrifices done by the priest in the temple (a shadow of Christ sacrifice) he had to be on the tree for a number of hours not the 15-20 minutes it would have taken him to die had he been outstretched with hands in the air. It is a matter of realizing what each hour meant and who he redeemed by the last hour. (See book tabernacle Shadows).
Even the governingbody says now it doesn’t matter if a cross or stake. That is because they know it was likely the way the Romans tortured all supposed criminals. They caused a lot of pain by making it an issue but now with the internet they try to minimize their error. I don’t think it was Jesus with that on his mind at all, it was the witness hierarchy who wanted to always push “different means right” on society.
This is a site for witnesses and former witnesses so they would understand the issue. There is no disrespect meant at all to our Lord and Saviour. Are you a witness? Doesn’t matter but give us your story or journey please if you’d like.
      Jacqueline
