What is the One True Church?

Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; that they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us...” — John 17:20, 21

It is often asked, “What is the right denomination?” There are hundreds, if not thousands of denominations all claiming to be this one true church, but does God recognize any of these as His representative on earth?  This subject should be approached prayerfully and honestly. If there was but one church in the beginning, established by our Lord, there should be but the one church in the end — the church triumphant in glory. Colossians 3:4

The word church was first used in the New Testament and is a translation of the Greek word ekklesia, which means a calling out. Jesus said to his disciples, “I have chosen you  out of the world.” (John 15:19)  The true church is a company of believers who, in accepting the invitation of Christ, have become sanctified or separated from the world, worldly pursuits and worldly organizations.

Those of the early church bore no denominational names, but were simply identified by their location. “Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, …sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints…” (1 Corinthians 1:2)  These sanctified individuals in various communities set themselves apart from the world and dedicate their lives to God through the merit of His Son.  Thus, the true church is not a place to go to, nor is it a denomination to belong to. The church is the gathering of sincere believers.  Paul emphasized this when he confirmed that Jesus’ followers were baptized only into Christ and not into an earthly organization.  There is but one baptism, and that is into Christ. Thus, it is a misconception that one joins or is baptized into a particular church denomination. Ephesians 4:4-6; Galatians 3:27; Romans 6:3, 4

Hi Sis. Jackelyn. No need to ask to ask Bro. Jerome. Anyone can answer my question. Thanks everyone for the comments.

I don’t know if my previous comment got posted already. It’s just a question regarding R. Jerome Harris’ comment. When it comes to our sharing of the good news to others, when we know that they are actively participating in their religion’s practices, and that these practices are contrary to what the bible teaches, aren’t we supposed to bring up those matters using the bible? But I know we should only do so after tackling our common bible beliefs and other basic doctrines. And let the person decide if he wants to join our group

Noel. Yes Br. Peter passed your info on to the brothers in your country. I just saw your comment and am on the study now but I will read what R Jerome said first, then answer you. Now on this site we have many persons commenting, often they might not be of the Bible student association but may have mission or thought pattern of their own. They are welcome here and can express themselves. R Jerome has his own ministry and many good ideas but different. Since he has his own site and ministry I could go ask him to come over here and answer you. Would you like for me to do that? I can find him.
If not I will give you my take on what he is saying after I read his comment.

Regarding R. Jerome Harris’ comment, i’d like to ask if in this present time, our membership to whatever religious group is irrelevant if we want to continue serving Christ? What if we find out that our religion’s practices or teachings are contrary, is it alright if remain active in that group? Just asking?

Noel……………Its our conscience we want to keep pure. Mathew 5:8 Unless Jehovah God builds the house it really of no value. This is the scripture that helped me in making my decisions:……Ezekiel 3:18 “When I say to someone wicked, ‘You will positively die,’ and you do to warn him and speak in order to warn the wicked one fom his wicked way to preserve him alive, he being wicked, in his error he will die, but his blood I shall ask back from your own hand” Pretty serious don’t you think?

Noel concerning membership. I see no scriptural reason for having to join a church because Christians should be able to meet in little or larger groups for fellowship but not have a paid minister. Order of service is needed like the early ecclias in the bible.
Regards correcting other beliefs that we feel are against scripture:
I choose to listen to others point of view, agree where I can and ask just a question or two to make sure I understand them. I don’t feel a need to correct their viewpoint even if there is a pointed scripture. I prefer to have fellowship and gradually let them see. I say this because the Brothers here with the Bs would listen to my comments on armageddon, great tribulation and ransom. I saw some alertness in their facial expressions but they never corrected my warped view! How loving not to crush me!
They saw I was there and knew I was grabbing tracts and was intelligent enough to see my views were not scriptural on the Ransom.
Our Saviour said LOVE, not doctrine and correct understanding of the Bible is the key. Peter would be in trouble if getting things wrong was a barometer. Yet he is one of the pillows of the heavenly kingdom.
So in conclusion comfort those that are trying to escape these systems and doctrines. Just maybe do as Bro. Dan did at our Wednesday night study, we just read a whole chapter in the Bible and more scriptures one after the other. Holy spirit went into operation and we got the points no matter what we had formally thought that scriture meant. We have to convince ourselves not others. Let Holy spirit do it’s job. Jesus told us in John 12:-17: about the role of the spirit. That is my take on what Jerome brought up. Just think we can talk and discuss now. We could not do this as a witness. November km of 2007 said definitely not to discuss outside of kh. Br. Raymond Franz and others were disfellowshipped for doing just that digging into the scriptures as a small group..
      So Noel welcome.
