My GPS said “you have arrived at your destination, 1331-36 W 95th St. Chicago, Il. Br. Jeff Mezera (a Bible Student) was invited to speak at the “Christian Fellowship Refuge Ministries” church with Elder Keith J Evans, Pastor and Jeff gave an encouraging Truth message. The pastor is the employer of Jeff’s wife. Pastor Evans talked of his Bible discussions with Jeff. They both seemed to have mutual respect for each other’s knowledge of the word of God. I was invited along with Sis. Geri, another ex-witness now a Bible Student. We were in for a blessing indeed. Pastor Evans had no books, just the Bible. He asked us to open to the “Model Prayer”, we each read 2 verses. He proceeded to break this simple, yet powerful, prayer down into simple understanding. He did so with full audience participation. The congregation was small at 10am but that soon changed. During their morning worship (praise and preaching), the audience size kept exploding, there was standing room only. Where were these people coming from? Then we met “Bonnie Taylor” an evangelizing sister that brought anybody that would come. She appreciated what would be said at this special Sunday event. Br. Jeff did an excellent slide presentation about family and thanksgiving. He showed the earth with a plans “A” and “B”. The earth exploded on plan B and the audience with fervor agreed that God’s Plan “A” was the best. They were alive in that Church, they were not passive in their expressions of love.
Now for Sister Geri and my blessings. We didn’t know what to do but we watched, looked and learned. This congregation reminded us of David and the entire book of Psalms. These Christian men and women sang unto the Lord. They opened their mouth and lifted their hands to God and they sang praises to him!! The Lyrics were accurate and true. Jamak Taylor and Keith Taylor Jr. were on drums and keyboard. God had to have heard them! The pastor and young men were singing, women and little girls were singing. They were not stiff like boards; this was coming from their heart! I know they wonder what was wrong with us staring at them like zombies. I for one was seeing what must have happened during the installation of the ark:
2Samuel 6:14, 15: “And David danced before the LORD with all his might; and David was girded with a linen ephod. (15) So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the LORD with shouting, and with the sound of the trumpet.”
Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom: teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.” They were not afraid to talk to God in praise, to sing to each other in up building! They knew the words to the songs!! (Only a witness understands what I am talking about here). I FELT as if I came to praise God. There was no mention of the governing body or the faithful and discreet slave class. Prayers were offered in behalf of us; not to bless an organization. I felt as if I worshipped God only and his Son, Jesus Christ. Both the pastor Keith and Br. Jeff focused on Jesus, GOD and the Bible only! Pastor Keith talked about the plan of God and his purpose for mankind. It was a refreshing service indeed. This is a blessing that we could not count as a witness.
I saw sincere people reaching out to Jesus saying “Save We Pray”. They were conscious of their spiritual needs –Matthew 5:3. The “CONCIOUS CLASS” is truly a great crowd. I enjoyed my fellowship with the CFRMS Church and want to say to them, thank you, for the invitation to Br. Jeff, sis. Geri and I received a blessing too!!!
They were not proud as if we were lower than them; they made us feel so welcome. The pastor kept asking if we were feeling welcome. He was concerned about us, he knew we had been witnesses for 15- 60 yrs. And he was concerned not to hurt us in any way. He understood. I appreciate his loving concern and want to say thank you. And may God bless this little congregation for the love they showed. We were there a long time and like Jesus they had prepared a meal, so we might not give out on the road. (Matt. 14:19) We got to talk to others that had relatives that were witnesses. The many baskets they would be giving to the poor on Thanksgiving, reminded me of this scripture: (Jerusalem Bible)
Romans 14:1- 5. Verse 5 ”If one man keeps certain days as holier than others, and another considers all days to be equally holy, each must be left free to hold his own opinion. 6 The one who observes special days does so in honor of the Lord. The one who eats meat also does so in honor of the Lord, since he gives thanks to God; but then the man who abstains does that too in honor of the Lord, and so he also gives God thanks.
So, God blessings to you and yours my brothers in the Precious name of our Lord JESUS CHRIST.
PS. My brother and I in the summer of1960 gave talks at a Church’s youth day program. The CO and Do approved it. We were 12 and 13 and were pioneering and taking over the studies left without a conductor. My brother you see was accepted in Gilead and went to Africa as a missionary. We worked one territory for 3 months to finish his assignment and the Church in the community was very appreciative of the time we spent with all the young ones.
